Memorable Songs: Originals vs. Covers Part 1 with Richard Knox Online
“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”—an old proverb that rings especially true in the world of popular music. Timeless songs like Rodgers and Hart’s “Where or When”, George and Ira Gershwin’s “Someone to Watch Over Me”, and Meredith Wilson’s “’Til There Was You” have each been recorded hundreds of times by a wide range of artists following their original releases.
In this presentation, we’ll explore how some of these iconic songs from the Great American Songbook have been reinterpreted over time. By comparing notable cover versions with the originals, we’ll examine how changes in tempo, arrangement and performance style can transform a familiar tune—and in some cases, even enhance it.
